Jessica Scannapieco and Tyler Unwin are the Latest Pair to Earn WNE Student-Athletes of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—The Western New England University Department of Athletics has named its newest pair of Golden Bears Student-Athletes of the Week as Jessica Scannapieco (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon High School) and Tyler Unwin (Pittsfield, Vt./Rutland HS) claim the award for the week of April 20-26.

Scannapieco, a junior on the women's lacrosse team, is named the female student-athlete of the week after an impressive game during her team's final week of regular season competition. The communication major led the Golden Bears to a 14-11 win over Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Gordon College last Wednesday. The midfielder tallied a hat trick on seven shots along with a game-high 12 draw controls.

Not only was Scannapieco impressive on the turf at Golden Bear Stadium last week, she also has hauled in some impressive awards this spring from the CCC and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference: All-CCC First Team and ECAC New England Corvias Division III Women's Lacrosse co-Offensive Player of the Week. The Golden Bear has totaled 56 points on 34 goals and 22 assists this season.

Unwin, a senior on the men's tennis team, is the male honoree after finishing up his impressive career at Western New England. The co-captain was named the 2014 CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an illustrious award voted on by the conference's nine coaches. The communication major helped lead his team to the fifth-seed in the CCC Championship.

In his final season at WNE, Unwin finished with a record of 6-9 in singles play, leading his team to an 8-9 record on the season. He found most of his success as his team's fourth player, where he finished 4-7. In his last 10 matches, Unwin finished with a 5-5 record, including recent wins against Salve Regina University and Anna Maria College.

While the men's tennis team concluded the season Monday in the CCC Quarterfinals, the women's lacrosse team will begin its postseason play at home against Roger Williams University later today at 4 p.m. in the CCC Semifinals.
