Women's Soccer last week earned national distinction for its collective hard work off the field and in the classroom by earning the latest NSCAA Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The 2012-13 Golden Bears achieved a 3.27 team GPA.
Ron Dias, who just finished his 20th season at the helm of the Golden Bears, saw Gabrielle Bates (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham Monson Academy) and Bonnie Bousquet (Southbridge, Mass./Holy Name High School) earn Academic All-Commonwealth Coast Conference honors for the last complete school year. Bates majors in biology; Bousquet in neuroscience. The 2013 CCC Fall Sports Academic Team is expected to be released next month.
A young Western New England squad saw improvement by 125 points in winning percentage from the previous season, going 9-7-4 overall and 3-3-3 in conference play this fall. The Golden Bears started by winning the Husson University Classic for the second year in a row, fought then-No. 19 nationally-ranked Roger Williams University to a 1-1 draw in the regular-season finale, and placed five players on the All-CCC Team.
A sophomore out of Middletown, Conn., Askew tallied 19 points to lead all scorers despite a 70-53 setback on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Westfield State. The sport management major made 6 of 11 shots from the floor and 7-of-10 free throw attempts while also pulling down eight rebounds, as WNE enjoyed a 41-33 advantage on the glass. He also had two assists, a blocked shot and two steals.
For the season, Askew is averaging 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 62.0 percent from the field (31-50) to rank third in the CCC in that category.
