SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--It's here...the top-10 of 2014 in Western New England University Athletics. Through the month of January, we'll unveil the top 10 stories/moments played out by Western New England NCAA teams, coaches and student-athletes for the last calendar year. The countdown continues with our No. 8 entry: a third-straight year establishing a school record of 131 academic all-conference award winners from the Commonwealth Coast Conference, New England Football Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast.
The 131--which is up 17 from the previous benchmark of 114, set during the 2012-13 academic year--comes from CCC sports baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, women's volleyball and women's swimming, football's NEFC and men's hockey's ECAC Northeast affiliation.
Among the highlights, hockey set a program record with 17 selections. Women's Soccer placed nine to lead WNE's fall sports CCC entries while Men's Lacrosse matched that total to head the spring sports. Football had a whopping 25 honorees.
In addition, Golden Bear student-athletes received numerous academic awards at the national level as well as earning conference senior scholar-athlete of the year laurels, so check back with WNEGoldenBears.com to see if that major accomplishment makes our top-10 list.
