SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England University Athletics has chosen men's hockey forward Joe Budnick (Newington [Conn.]) High School) and women's basketball forward Sam McCann (Warren/Quaboag Regional HS) as the department's first student-athletes of the week for the new calendar year.

Since the last weekly awards were announced on Dec. 9 to end the fall semester, McCann led the Golden Bears with a 12.7 scoring average on a sizzling .667 field goal percentage during a 2-1 record since the team resumed action on the court on Jan. 6. The senior captain also averaged 4.0 rebounds and blocked a shot. The criminal justice major's week was highlighted by a career-high-tying 18 points on 8-of-9 from the floor to lead all scorers despite a 65-60 loss to Eastern Nazarene on Saturday. She also had a team-best 12 rebounds and six assists in a 58-51 win versus Nichols on Thursday.

Budnick had his best game in a Golden Bear uniform after netting his first career hat trick against Framingham State on Jan. 6, which earned him Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast co-Player of the Week laurels for the first time. The senior's three goals led WNE to a 3-3 draw with the Rams on the road. The criminal justice major is now tied for the team-lead with five goals, already matching his total from last season.
