Second WNE Student-Athletes of the Week for Spring Semester Announced
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—The Western New England University Athletics Department has announced that Carl Newman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson High School) from Wrestling and Jacquelyn Peterson (Beverly High School) of Women's Swimming are the latest Golden Bears to be named Western New England Student-Athletes of the Week. This is for the period Jan. 12-18.

Newman, weighing in at 184 pounds, won a crucial match against Worcester Polytechnic Institute that helped the team earn an 18-15 victory over the New England Wrestling Association's eighth-ranked team on Wednesday, Jan. 14. For his efforts, the electrical engineering major was named the wrestler of the week by the Pilgrim Wrestling League for the first time in his collegiate career. Down 6-2 with less than 10 seconds left in the first period, Newman pinned Joe Pizzuto to turn what could have been a double-digit lead for WPI into a 15-12 deficit instead for the Golden Bears. Newman's victory in the waning seconds sparked WNE to claim the last three bouts for the team win.

Peterson had a phenomenal meet with two victories versus Westfield State in a competitive meeting on Sunday. Peterson secured the 1650-yard freestyle in 21 minutes and 19.47 seconds and the 500-free in 6:17.96. The creative writing major made an "A" cut time in the former to the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association Championships and swam her fastest time this season in the 50-free at 28.97 seconds to finish in fourth place.
