WNE Student-Athletes of the Week Announced to Close Month of January
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University Athletics Department has announced Chelsea Miemiec (Westfield High School) of women's swimming and Mike Gelineau (Waltham High School) from men's basketball as the newest Golden Bear student-athletes of the week, for the period ending Sunday.

Miemiec was one of several Golden Bears to automatically qualify for the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association Championships during the team's dual-meet at Simmons College on Sunday. The marketing major swam to an "A" cut time of 21 minutes and 24.71 seconds in the 1650-yard freestyle, shaving off 18 seconds from her previous outing in the event. She placed fifth in the grueling race. The senior also picked up points toward the total team score in the 50-free (29.55, 5th), 100-breaststroke (1:28.09, 6th) and 200-free relay as the second leg on the "A" squad (30.63/1:53.92, 3rd).

Gelineau was named the program's first Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Week of the season after leading the Golden Bears in scoring during a 2-0 week against CCC competition. He averaged 18.5 points, while shooting 50 percent (11-of-22) from the field and 46 percent (6-of-13) from three-point range, and 5.0 rebounds. The sophomore guard opened the week by scoring a team-best 15 points and burying a game-winning three-pointer with 15 seconds left in WNE's 74-71 victory over Salve Regina at home on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The finance major then registered a game-high 22 points, seven rebounds and two assists in a 69-63 triumph Sunday at University of New England, with 14 of his points coming in the second half. The league's seventh-ranked scoring at 15.3 points per game drained a key trey to make it a two-possession game late.
