Janelle Lief and Dane Genord are the Latest WNE Student-Athletes of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University Athletics Department has announced that men's ice hockey player Dane Genord (Grand Blanc, Mich./New Hampshire Monarchs, EJHL) and women's swimmer Janelle Lief (San Jose, Calif./Notre Dame) have been named the student-athletes of the week, for the period ending Sunday.

Genord, a sophomore, scored one goal and had one assist during two games last week, the first on Thursday against Becker College. The come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Ice Hawks came from Genord's game-winning goal with 4 minutes, 34 second left. During the game on Saturday against Wentworth Institute of Technology, Genord gained an assist on the first goal of the game, which was scored by Michael Darrar. With their third-straight conference win, the Golden Bears improve to 4-12-3 overall and 4-5 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast. The business analytics and information management major now has a team-leading seven goals and three assists on the season after recording four assists in all of 2013-14.

A freshman, Lief qualified for the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships during the final dual meet of the season on Saturday. She had a "B" cut time in the 200-yard butterfly at 2 minutes and 46.91 seconds. Two fellow swimmers also qualified for the championships, while the Golden Bears finished 4-4 on the season. The general business major will have a chance to compete at the 2015 NEISDA Championships hosted by the University of Rhode Island on Feb. 14-16.
