The Western New England College 2003 Softball Team posted a 32-7 record in its “Silver Anniversary” season that was the second highest win total in team history. The Golden Bears also compiled a 19-2 mark for first place in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). At one point in the season, Western New England College won 25 of 26 games. The Golden Bears won four straight contests to repeat as GNAC Tournament champions. Seeded fourth in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship, Coach Lori Mayhew’s squad made school history by defeating Keene State (1-0), Tufts (5-0), and host Wheaton (3-1 and 2-1) to capture the program’s first regional title. Western New England College then advanced for the first time to the NCAA Division III Final Eight Championship in Salem, VA. The Golden Bears were ranked 10th in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III poll, the highest ranking ever by a Western New England College team at the time.
