Elena Massa-Musiak’s strong competitive spirit and dedication made her one of the top swimmers in Golden Bears history. The Easthampton, MA native was a four-year performer and two-time All-New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) selection. As a sophomore Elena placed second in the 50-yard butterfly, third in the 50 breaststroke, and swam the first leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship. She also was the recipient of the team’s Coaches Award. Elena helped the Golden Bears to an 11-3 record and a runner-up showing at the GNAC Championship her junior year. She took second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 50 breaststroke at the conference meet. Elena earned her All-New England honors by finishing sixth in the 50 freestyle during both her sophomore and junior seasons. She served as a team captain her senior year as the Golden Bears compiled a 7-4 record while winning the program’s first ever GNAC Tournament title. At the conference meet, she won the gold medal in the 50 breaststroke and swam on the first-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay squads. Elena held 12 school records, individual and relay, and still owns five. A nationally-known triathlete, she placed second among 82 competitors in her age group at the Ironman Lake Placid race on July 27, 2014 to qualify for the World Championship on October 11, 2014 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Elena received her bachelor’s degree in Biology (with a minor in Chemistry). She is a pharmacist who resides in Easthampton, MA with her husband Matthew (who is also a triathlete).
