SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - In a doubleheader that took more than five hours to complete, the Western New England College baseball team defeated visiting Anna Maria 3-2 in 10 innings and 6-3 Monday afternoon (Apr. 19) at Trelease Park.

The Golden Bears ran their winning streak to 11 games and raised their overall mark to 27-6 with a 16-4 mark in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The AMCATS drop to 16-17 and 9-13 in the league.

Freshman second baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) drove home the winning run with no outs in the 10th in the opener. Junior catcher Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore right fielder Tom Bouvier (East Longmeadow, MA) who was safe on first following an error.

Junior second baseman Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) drove in the first two Golden Bears' runs with a triple in the second and sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Anna Maria rallied with two runs in the seventh when senior left fielder Jeff Lander (Gloucester, MA) tied the game with a RBI single. He finished with three of the visitors' six hits.

WNEC senior pitcher Matt Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) retired the first 13 batters before Lander lined a single to right that glanced off the glove of Bouvier who made a diving effort. Bouvier quickly recovered and threw out Lander trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Sophomore Mike Lawlor (Windsor, CT) allowed only three hits with three strikeouts and a walk in four innings in moving his record to 3-0.

In the second game that ended in near darkness, the Golden Bears scored four times in the fifth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit.

Bouvier had a key RBI single in the inning serving as the designated hitter, then pitched an inning-and-a-third in relief giving up a hit with two strikeouts to earn the save.

Fatse knocked in three runs with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and two-run double in the fifth. Leclerc singled, doubled, scored a run, and had a RBI.

Junior pitcher Zach Cloft (Glastonbury, CT) settled down after a shaky start and improved his record to 3-0. He gave up six hits, but struck out six and walked only two.

Anna Maria senior designated hitter JK Vaughn (Simsbury, CT) went 3-for-3 with a pair of singles and double. He and Lander each collected RBI singles to help give the AMCATS a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
