Newell, who is now an assistant coach, played a perfect center field last spring recording 109 putouts and two assists without making an error.
Newell finished with a career batting average of .385 in 135 games from 2006-09, and compiled an impressive .974 fielding percentage with only seven errors in 271 chances.
Serving as a team captain his senior season, Newell batted .404 and was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England All-Star Team. He also received the team's Silver Slugger Award.
Newell hit .390 as a junior and gained a spot on the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III team. He was the recipient of the team's prestigious 10th Player Award.
Newell twice made The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) All-Star Team.
