SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Juniors Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) and Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA) have been selected the 2012 Western New England Female and Male Coca-Cola Athletes-of-the-Year, it was announced Tuesday (June 12).
The two student-athletes will be honored at the Western New England Hall of Fame Banquet on Friday, September 28, during Homecoming Weekend.
Emily Savino – Women’s Basketball
Savino, a guard on the women’s basketball team, was a First Team All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) selection and the WNE Most Outstanding Player this past winter. She led the Golden Bears with a 16.0 scoring average that ranked second in the conference, and was first in the CCC in free-throw (82.3) and second in field-goal (47.1) percentage.
Savino, who has 986 career points, scored in double figures 15 times with a season high 28 in a victory over Roger Williams. She is a Dean’s List Sport Management major and a Conference Academic Team honoree.
With Savino helping to lead the way, Western New England finished with a 14-13 record for the program’s 13th winning season in the last 14 years. The Golden Bears also tied for third in the conference with a 12-6 mark and advanced to the semifinals of the CCC Championship for the first time since 2008.
Tim Clark - Baseball
Clark, the second baseman on the baseball squad, made the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III All-America First and D3baseball.com All-America Second Teams. He was the recipient of the ABCA Gold Glove Award after making only six errors in 244 chances for a .975 fielding percentage.
Clark led the Golden Bears in batting (.428), hits (80), triples (5), and both slugging (.551) and on-base (.464) percentage. He had a 24-game hitting streak and compiled 25-multi hit performances.
A Political Science major, Clark was the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player-of-the-Year and an All-CCC First Team honoree. He made the All-New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III First Team and was voted to the NCAA Division III New England Regional All-Tournament Team.
Western New England posted a 38-13 record this past season, which was the second highest win total in program’s history and its 18 consecutive winning season. The Golden Bears were first in the CCC with a 15-1 mark and captured their fifth consecutive CCC Championship (and seventh straight league title). WNE just missed a return visit to the Division III World Series after placing second in the NCAA New England Regional Championship.
