WESTFIELD, Mass.--Western New England outhit Westfield State 17 to 15 but couldn't overcome a quick start by the home team in a 14-7 non-conference loss to the Owls on Wednesday at Bud & Jim Hagan Field. The Golden Bears fall to 11-12 on the season while Westfield improves to 16-5.

Senior Steve Buckley paced the WNE offense by going 3-for-5 with a run scored and sophomore Daniel Morin went 4-for-5 with three runs. Juniors Chris Casey, Eduardo Colmenares, Kevin Marciano and freshman Jared Rosenblatt added two hits apiece. Casey and Colmenares both drove in two runs.

Westfield's Dan Whigham went 4-for-4 at the plate and Kyle Murphy went 2-for-3, including a triple, with three runs batted in.

The Owls started off with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Danny Dimatteo had an RBI-single and came around to score on a wild pitch.

But the Golden Bears cut the deficit in half in their next at-bat. Morin led off the second with a single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Colmenares singled to plate Morin and he would later score on a RBI-single by sophomore Kyle Maglio.

Westfield, however, scored four more runs in the bottom half of the frame to go up 8-2. Senior Tim Santili hit a double to right center to drive in two runs for the big blow in the inning, and the Golden Bears couldn't get closer after that.

Western New England scored three runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Casey and RBI-single from Marciano.

The Golden Bears return home at 4 p.m. Thursday to host New England region rival Wheaton College at Trelease Park.
