SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 26, 2016) – Senior infielder Eduardo Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) of the Western New England University baseball team has been selected to represent the Golden Bears at the 2016 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-Star Game, which will be held next Sunday, June 5 at Fitton Field on the campus of The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
The NEIBA All-Star game features the top senior talent from NCAA Division I, II and III programs based in New England. The 'College Division' All-Star squad is made up of DII and DIII student-athletes, while the 'University Division' team consists of DI players. An award ceremony will be held prior to the start of the contest at 5:35 p.m., with first pitch to follow at 6 p.m.
Colmenares, who was named to the NEIBA All-New England second team earlier this week, hit .403 (58-for-144) with eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 41 RBI (5th in CCC) while scoring 43 runs (6th) in 40 games this spring. The All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) second team selection also ranked second in the CCC in on-base percentage (.471) and tied for fifth in slugging percentage (.556).
Colmenares is among 18 DIII student-athletes to be invited to participate in the NEIBA All-Star Game, and just one of three from CCC institutions, along with JJ Branch and Anthony Serina of Endicott. The Caracas, Venezuela native was named NEIBA Player of the Week on March 21 after batting .455 with a team-high 13 runs scored and 13 RBI during Western New England's 8-0 start to the season.
The Golden Bears finished the 2016 campaign with an overall record of 30-11, including a 13-3 mark in conference play that was good enough to earn the top seed in the CCC Tournament.
