SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 9, 2016) -
Western New England University juniors Daniel Morin (Salem, N.H.) of the baseball team and Gabby Lavinio (Dalton, Mass.) of the softball team have both earned Academic All-District honors, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

With their selections to the Academic All-District I first team, Morin and Lavinio now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

Lavinio, a secondary education & history double major with a 3.64 cumulative grade point average, earned Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Year honors this spring after batting .448 (4th in CCC) with 13 doubles (T-1st), seven home runs (T-2nd), and 30 RBI (3rd) through the end of the regular season. She also ranked second in the conference in both on-base percentage (.515) and slugging percentage (.776) while drawing 11 walks and scoring 26 runs.

Morin, an electrical engineering major with a 3.80 cumulative grade point average, was named to the All-CCC first team this season after leading the CCC in both home runs (six) and RBI (41) while hitting .341 with eight doubles and one triple during the regular season. Morin opened the 2016 campaign with a ten-game hitting streak and posted nine multi-RBI performances.

Lavinio and Morin are the only student-athletes from CCC institutions to earn Academic All-District honors for softball and baseball, respectively.

The Western New England softball team went 23-18 (15-3 CCC) this spring and earned the top seed in the CCC Tournament before having its postseason run ended with a loss to Roger Williams on Saturday morning.

The baseball team (30-9, 13-3 CCC) also earned the top seed in the conference tournament and won its first two games last week. The Golden Bears are set to host Endicott this afternoon at 3 p.m., with the winner advancing directly to Wednesday's championship round.
