Southwick, Mass. native went 7-2 with 2.21 ERA in 2017

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 23, 2017) – Sophomore left-handed pitcher Bob Hamel (Southwick, Mass.) of the Western New England University baseball team has earned third team All-Region honors from both D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), it was announced on Tuesday.

Hamel, who was also an All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) second team honoree this spring, went 7-2 with a 2.21 earned run average and 49 strikeouts in 57.0 innings of work. The ace of Western New England's pitching staff, Hamel posted complete game efforts in five of his nine starts, and logged at least six innings on six occasions.

On March 17 in Florida, Hamel struck out seven batters and surrendered just two hits and one unearned run during a seven inning complete game performance in Western New England's 7-1 victory over then-No. 13 nationally ranked the College of New Jersey. The left-hander struck out a season-high nine batters over just five innings in the Golden Bears' 13-6 win over Framingham State on March 11. In his final appearance of the season on May 4, Hamel struck out five batters and gave up two runs as Western New England defeated Gordon, 11-2, in the opening game of the CCC Tournament.

Hamel made an immediate impact for the Golden Bears during his freshman season in 2016, earning ABCA All-New England second team accolades to go with ECAC Rookie of the Year, CCC Rookie of the Year, and All-CCC second team honors.

In 18 career appearances (17 starts), Hamel is 14-3 with a 2.05 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 109.2 innings. The 2015 graduate of Southwick-Tolland Regional High School is majoring in electrical engineering at Western New England.
