SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (July 10, 2017) – Coming off its most successful season in program history, the Western New England University football team has received a pair of preseason national rankings from D3football.com and Lindy's Sports magazine.

The Golden Bears, who went 11-1 last fall and earned their first ever NCAA Tournament victory with a 44-27 triumph over Husson University on November 19, are ranked No. 21 by Lindy's and No. 24 by D3football.com heading into the 2017 campaign.

Western New England returns 37 letterwinners and 15 starters from last year's squad, including senior defensive lineman Sam Edouard (Roosevelt, N.Y.), the 2016 New England Football Conference (NEFC) Defensive Player of the Year, and senior quarterback Anthony Service (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), an All-NEFC first team selection as a junior in 2016.

The Golden Bears open their 2017 campaign at home on Saturday, September 2 with the fifth edition of the Pynchon SAW rivalry game against Springfield College. Western New England's challenging non-conference schedule also features a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament opener against Husson (September 23) and a visit from St. Lawrence University (September 30), which went 9-1 and was ranked as high as No. 13 nationally last season. The inaugural season of Commonwealth Coast Football gets underway with a matchup against Endicott College on October 14.
