SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 6, 2019) – Junior linebacker Ricky Montalvo (Rocky Hill, Conn.) of the Western New England University football team has been named the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Sunday.
Montalvo earns this honor for the second time in his career after playing a key role in Western New England's 30-19 victory over Nichols College on Saturday at Golden Bear Stadium.
Montalvo recorded 11 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss of 15 yards and 1.5 sacks, against the Bison. Late in the first half, he blocked a potential go-ahead Nichols field goal attempt that senior Deven Perez returned 73 yards for a touchdown, giving the Golden Bears a 17-9 advantage at halftime.
Montalvo earns CCC Football weekly honors for the third time in his career and first since his freshman campaign in 2017, when he was recognized as both the Defensive Rookie of the Week (10/22) and Defensive Player of the Week (11/12).
Western New England (4-1, 2-0 CCC Football) is off next weekend before returning to Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday, October 19 to host Salve Regina at 1:00 p.m.
