Golden Bears Fall to Salve Regina in CCC Opener, 4-1

Senior Allison Jackson scores her second goal of the season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 13, 2017) –
The Western New England University field hockey team opened Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a 4-1 setback to Salve Regina University on Wednesday evening at Golden Bear Stadium.  

Top Performers
• Senior midfielder Allison Jackson (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored Western New England's lone goal, her second of the season, late in regulation on a feed from junior midfielder Lana Felice (Pawling, N.Y.).

• Senior Amber Cody (Pawling, N.Y.) fueled the Salve Regina offense with two goals and one assist, while senior goalkeeper Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) made six saves on seven shots.

Game Review
• After a scoreless first half, Cody got the Seahawks on the board just 28 seconds into the second period with the help of an assist from freshman forward Tori Bickel (Harleysville, Pa.).
• The visitors doubled their advantage less than five minutes later on freshman Kaity Gannon's (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) first career goal, before going up 3-0 at the 44:55 mark when sophomore Ashley Cody (Pawling, N.Y.) took a pass from Amber Cody and fired the ball into the cage.
• After Amber Cody scored her second of the night later in the half, Western New England broke through on a penalty corner play with 5:57 remaining in regulation. Senior Michelle Carlson (Hackettstown, N.J.) took the corner and delivered a pass to Felice, who found Jackson at the top of the circle. The senior ripped a shot past Severino to cut the Golden Bears' deficit to three.
• Western New England was able to manage three penalty corners the rest of the way, but Salve Regina held the Golden Bears off to secure the win.

Notes
• Salve Regina outshot Western New England 15-13, but the Golden Bears held an 8-6 edge in penalty corners.
• Senior goalkeeper Dominique Corveddu (Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y.) made six saves for Western New England.

Western New England (2-2, 0-1 CCC) is off until next Tuesday, when the Golden Bears travel to Nichols, while Salve Regina (2-1, 1-0 CCC) returns home to host Gordon on Saturday.
