Western New England opens season at home against Wheaton on Sunday, September 2
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (August 23, 2018) – Coming off consecutive appearances in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament, the Western New England University field hockey team has been picked fourth in the CCC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league office announced on Thursday.
The Golden Bears received 25 points in the poll, which is voted on by all seven coaches in the CCC. Four-time defending champion University of New England was selected as the preseason favorite with 47 points and five first place votes. Endicott College followed in second place with 44 points and two first place nods, while Salve Regina checked in at No. 3 with 31 points. Roger Williams (22 points), Nichols (15 points) and Gordon (12 points) rounded out the final three spots in the poll.
Western New England will be seeking its third straight appearance in the CCC Tournament after reaching the semifinals last season and the championship contest in 2016.
The Golden Bears are led by Mary Clare Snediker, who begins her fourth season at the helm of the field hockey program in 2018. Despite losing last year's top three scorers to graduation, Western New England returns junior Jacqueline Clark (Auburn, Mass.) and sophomore Haley Daigneault (Longmeadow, Mass.), who combined for 29 points in 2017. Seniors Lana Felice (Pawling, N.Y.) and Leah Kelemen (Bartlett, N.H.) will also play key roles for the Golden Bears.
Western New England hosts Wheaton College in its 2018 opener on Sunday, September 2nd. The Golden Bears then head out on the road for their next four contests, including the CCC opener at the University of New England on Wednesday, September 12th.
