BRISTOL, R.I. – The Western New England University field hockey team saw its 2019 campaign come to a close with a 3-1 loss to Roger Williams University on Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament at Bayside Field.
Roger Williams (12-9) advances to the CCC semifinals on Thursday to take on top-seeded Endicott in Beverly, Mass. Western New England finishes its season at 7-12.
Roger Williams was led by sophomore midfielder Hannah Palmer (Essex Junction, Vt.), who recorded a goal and an assist. Senior Alex Coppinger (Guilderland, N.Y.) and junior Emma Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) also scored for the Hawks, while sophomore Brooklyn Cenatiempo (Trumbull, Conn.) dished out a pair of assists.
After a scoreless opening period, Stevens got the home team on the board with five minutes left in the half following a penalty corner when she found the back of the net on a feed from Cenatiempo.
The Hawks, who led 1-0 at the break, doubled their advantage early in the third quarter as Palmer set up Coppinger to make it 2-0.
Palmer then scored a goal of her own to increase Roger Williams' cushion to 3-0 with 4:03 left in the contest.
With less than two minutes to play, Western New England broke through on Gallagher's third goal of the season.
