PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Sophomore forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) scored 19 points and junior guard Jon Godbout (Bristol, CT) added 10 points, but it wasn't enough as visiting Western New England College dropped a 67-60 decision to Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest.
Bayne scored 13 points in the opening 20 minutes and the Golden Bears shot 55.6% to take a 29-26 lead at half-time.
The Wildcats came back to take a 36-34 lead with 12:35 left in the contest. WNEC freshman guard Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) made a basket that tied the game at 36-36.
JWU then went on a 15-5 run for a 50-41 lead at the 3:28 mark and the Golden Bears couldn't catch up. The Wildcats made 21-of-23 free throws, including 14 straight in the last 1:25 of the game.
Abdul-Wadud finished with seven points (making 3-of-4 shots from the field). Senior center Mike Cutler (Amherst, MA) had nine points and three boards.
Western New England College falls to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the GNAC; JWU is 6-5 and 4-1.
