QUINCY, Mass. – Senior guards Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) scored 17 points and made five free throws in the final 1:37 to lead the Western New England College men’s basketball team to an 80-71 victory over upset-minded Eastern Nazarene Wednesday night (Feb. 6).
The Golden Bears (12-8) matched their season high three-game winning streak and moved into a four-way tie for second place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 6-2 mark.
Senior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) and junior guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) also played big roles with 15 points apiece while senior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) had 12 points and six rebounds.
Junior forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) had another solid game just missing his fifth consecutive double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
This was the first time this season that Western New England College had five players scoring in double figures.
Hernandez connected on four three-pointers, including three straight that gave the visitors a 51-35 lead with 15:37 remaining in the contest.
The Crusaders rallied getting within four points twice in the final 2:31, but the Golden Bears made five key free throws to seal the key conference road victory.
Senior forward Jean-Paul Marcellus (Dorchester, MA) led ENC with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. Senior center Luc Jasmin (Pawtucket, RI) added 16 points and eight boards while freshman guard DeAngelo Alston (Columbia, SC) netted 11 points.
Eastern Nazarene falls to 4-16 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
Western New England College shot 49.2% from the field for its fourth best performance of the season.
