KWestern New England College senior Asif Abdul-Wadud selected TCCC Defensive Player-of-the-Year

Abdul-Wadud and Jim Bayne also gain All-TCC recognition 

SPRINGIFIELD, Mass. - The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) honored Western New England College senior Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) as its Defensive Player-of-the-Year Monday night (Feb. 25).

Abdul-Wadud and senior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) also received an honorable mention on the All-TCCC Team. Both players served as two of the team captains this season.

The point guard, Abdul-Wadud played a key role as Western New England College is second in the conference in scoring defense (64.7 points). He lead the Golden Bears in steals (54) that ranks third in the conference.

Abdul-Wadud, an Electrical Engineering major, is averaging 9.2 points and 3.4 rebounds heading into the playoffs.

Despite missing seven games early in the season with an injury, Bayne leads the Golden Bears in scoring (11.5 avg.) and is second in rebounding (6.2). He also is shooting 45.2% from the field and 70.9% from the foul line. He is a Business major.

Western New England College has a 15-10 record, including a 9-4 mark that tied for third in the league during the regular season.

The Golden Bears, the fourth seed in the tournament, will host fifth-seeded University of England (also 14-10, 9-4) at 8:00 p.m. Thursday in a quarterfinal round game of the conference tournament.
