SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) netted a career and game high 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds as fourth-seeded Western New England College posted a 69-60 victory over fifth-seeded University of England in a quarterfinal round game of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Men’s Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening (Feb. 26) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Fredette sank 7-of-11 field goal attempts, was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line, and added two assists, two seals, and a pair of blocked shots.
Western New England College (16-10) advances to play at top-seeded Curry (a 63-53 winner over eighth-seeded_ on Thursday (Feb. 28).
Senior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) contributed 18 points with 13 coming in the opening half as the Golden Bears took a 36-28 advantage at the break.
Junior guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) added 11 points, including a clutch three-pointer that gave WNEC a 61-56 lead with 2:05 left in the game.
TCCC Defensive Player-of-the-Year senior guard Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) didn’t score any points, but dished eight assists and had a pair of steals.
The University of New England had three players in double figures led by junior guard Jaykri Simpson (East Cleburne, TX) with 16 points. Senior forward Issac Stickney (Rumford, ME) contributed 16 points while sophomore center Gregg Swartzenberg (Danville, VT) added 13 points in a reserve role. Freshman guard Chas Rentrope (Peoria, AZ) grabbed eight rebounds.
The Nor’easters held a 25-24 edge in field goals, but the Golden Bears were 16-of-25 from the foul line while UNE converted 9-of-11 charity shots.
UNE finishes its season with a 14-11 record.
