SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Playing for the first time in four weeks, the Western New England College men’s basketball team rolled to an easy 84-49 victory over visiting Massachusetts College in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon (Jan. 5) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Senior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) led the Golden Bears with 12 points coming off the bench after connecting on 4-of-8 three-pointers.
Junior forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) added eight points and a game high 11 rebounds.
Senior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) returned to action for the first time since suffering a foot injury in the season opener against Rhode Island College on November 16. He netted eight points and pulled down five rebounds in 21 minutes.
Also scoring eight points were sophomore guard Chris DeVine (Wilbraham, MA), sophomore forward Brendan Murphy (West Springfield, MA), and sophomore guard Paul Kennedy (Longmeadow, MA).
Western New England College (5-4) broke an early 9-9 tie with an 8-0 run and extended its margin to 44-19 at intermission. The Golden Bears held a 49-33 advantage off the boards and limited MCLA to only 32.1% shooting from the field.
Senior forward Diante Ellis (Jacksonville, FL) led the Trailblazers (4-5) with 12 points and eight rebounds while senior guard Dave Bisesi (Syracuse, NY) contributed nine points. Senior guard Shalka Rivera (Springfield, MA) chipped in with eight points in a reserve role.
Western New England College also posted a 73-68 win over Massachusetts College back on November 27 in North Adams, Massachusetts to sweep the season series.
