SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior guard Tucker Bashaw (Williston, VT) scored a game high 18 points as visiting Roger Williams University posted a 65-52 men’s basketball victory over Western New England College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) game Tuesday evening (Jan. 15) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
The Hawks also received 10 points apiece from senior center Geoff Baranger (Fairfield, CT) and junior guard Billy Barrett (Fairfield, CT) in raising their record to 6-8 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Roger Williams shot well from three-point territory making 9-of-21 attempts (42.9%) in addition to converting 10-of-12 free throws (83.3%).
The Hawks took an early 8-0 lead before the Golden Bears came back to tie the score at 16 with 6:58 left in the half. RWU broke away in the last six minutes to take a 34-24 lead at the break.
Roger Williams opened the second half with an 11-1 run highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers by Bashaw and Barrett for a 45-25 advantage with 16:16 left in the contest.
Western New England College chipped away at the lead, but could get no closer than eight at 58-50 when senior guard Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) made a lay-up with 1:07 remaining.
Senior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) led the hosts with 16 points and nine rebounds while Abdul-Wadud finished with 10 points and four assists.
WNEC drops to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in TCCC.
