Western New England College meets red-shot Curry in TCCC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Fourth-seeded Western New England College will hope for a repeat of its success against top-seeded Curry in a semifinal round game of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Men’s Basketball Tournament Thursday evening (Feb. 28) in Milton, Massachusetts.

The Golden Bears (16-10) downed fifth-seeded University of New England 69-60 in a quarterfinal round contest on Tuesday (Feb. 26) to set up a re-match with the surging Colonels.

WNEC handed Curry a 64-60 loss in its first game as a member of the conference January 12 in Springfield.

Since then, Curry has emerged as one of the hottest teams in the region. The Colonels had a 4-9 record after losing to the Golden Bears, but have rebounded with a 12-1 mark after defeating Endicott 63-53 for its ninth consecutive victory this past Tuesday.

Western New England College again will rely on a balanced scoring attack with four players averaging in doubles figures.

Senior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) (11.4 avg.) heads the group followed by senior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) (11.0), junior forward Kyle Fredette (10.8), and junior guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) (10.6).

Fredette has 12 double-doubles this season and leads the squad in rebounding with a 10.2 mark.

Curry boasts two of the region’s top players in All-TCCC First Team performers senior guard Tim Jones (Brookline, MA) (20.4 avg.) and senior center Johnathan Bowers (Kalamazoo, MI) (17.6). Bowers also is the squad’s top rebounded (10.2).

In the other semifinal game tonight, third-seeded Gordon (18-8) visits second-seeded Roger Williams (16-10).

TCCC championship game is set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday (March 1) at the higher seed.
