WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College men's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 55-50 loss at Westfield State Thursday evening (Jan. 10).
Senior guard Ryan Maurer (Pittsfield, MA) led the Owls with 16 points and junior guard Dave Jaehnig (Quincy, MA) added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Westfield State (10-3) led 25-17 at halftime and had a 34-22 advantage before the Golden Bears rallied behind the shooting of senior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) who netted seven of his team high 16 points in an 11-2 run to get WNEC within 44-42 with 3:34 remaining.
Jaehnig delivered a key basket by draining a three-pointer that gave the Owls a 47-42 edge and the hosts made 8-of-10 free throws in the final 1:23 for the victory.
Junior forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) had eight points and nine rebounds for Western New England College while senior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) also netted eight points while pulling down eight rebounds. Junior guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) was the third Golden Bears' player with eight points.
Western New England College (6-5) hosts Curry at 3:00 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 12) in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) opener for both squads.
