DUDLEY, Mass. - Freshman forward Kyle Mascilak (Sparta, NJ) scored a season high 28 points to lead the Nichols men's basketball team to a 92-79 victory over visiting Western New England College Thursday evening (Jan. 29).
The Bison raised their record to 9-8 while improving to 2-4 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Golden Bears, who had their five-game win streak ended, drop to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the league.
Mascilak entered the game averaging only 7.2 points a contest. Making just his second start, he connected on 10-of-12 shots from the field (making both three-pointers) and 6-of-7 free throws while pulling down nine rebounds.
Senior guard Rick Johnson (Springfield, MA) led five WNEC players in double figures with 18 points and six assists. Junior guard Chris Devine (Wilbraham, MA) added a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Andre Shaw (Jamaica, NY) tossed in 15 points and had five assists while senior guard Mike Booker (Springfield, MA) contributed 13 points and five rebounds.
Nichols led 39-34 at halftime and built a 17-point advantage (60-43) with just under 13 minutes left and Western New England College never got closer than eight after that.
Senior guard Bryan Riley (West Boylston, MA) had a double-double for the hosts with 18 points and 13 rebounds while compiling six assists. Also in double figures were senior guard Chris Paquin (Barre, MA) (15 points) and sophomore forward Pete Atkins (Gainesville, FL) (14 points).
Nichols finished with a 51.9 shooting percentage from the field while WNEC managed to make only 35.4% of its shots. The Bison also held a big 50-33 edge off the boards.
