QUINCY, Mass. - Sophomore guard Andre Shaw (Jamaica, NY) paced a balanced scoring attack with 20 points to lead the Western New England College men's basketball team to a 79-70 victory over Easter Nazarene Wednesday night (Feb. 3).
Shaw made 9-of-15 shots from the field coming off the bench as the Golden Bears climbed back over the .500 mark at 10-9 overall and 5-3 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). WNEC also surpasssed last year's win total of nine in the process.
Junior forward Brad Thomka (Springfield, MA) added 18 points, seven rebounds, and a career high six steals.
Also reaching double figures were senior forward Brendan Murphy (West Springfield, MA) with 13 points and junior guard Chris Devine (Wilbraham, MA) who had 11 points and a team best eight rebounds.
The Lions had two sophomore forwards compile double-doubles, CJ Gonzalez (Fall River, MA) who had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Chima Ezeigbo (Roanoke, VA) who poured in 21 points with 13 rebounds in a reserve role. Sophomore guard Michael McCoy (Altamonte Springs, FL) added 10 points coming off the bench.
Eastern Nazarene led 31-30 at halftime, but shot 28.3% from the floor in the final half. The Lions held a big 53-39 advantage off the boards and had 25 offensive rebounds, but WNEC made up for it by shooting 46.2% from the field in the final 20 minutes.
Devine's lay-up broke a 47-47 tie with 11:26 left and the Golden Bears stretched the lead to 11 at 75-64 following a pair of charity shots by Thomka with 1:35 remaining.
Eastern Nazarene drops to 4-16 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
