SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior guard Juan Maldonado (Holyoke, MA) scored 20 points and had four steals as Elms remained undefeated with an 84-65 victory over Western New England College in a non-league men’s basketball game Tuesday evening (Dec. 1) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Maldonado made 5-of-7 three-pointers and also collected three rebounds and two assists.
Senior forward Javon Mathis (East Hartford, CT) added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers who are ranked 20th nationally.
Sophomore guard Bryant Corcoran (Wolcott, CT) and freshman guard Andre French (Torrington, CT) each contributed nine points.
Western New England College jumped to a 13-3 lead before the visitors came back to take a 45-29 lead at intermission.
The Golden Bears (1-4) were still in the game trailing by 11 at 57-46 when senior guard Rick Johnson (Springfield, MA) knocked down a three-pointer with 11:53 left.
Maldonado hit a three-pointer to give Elms a 68-51 advantage with 9:58 remaining and the Blazers pulled away down the stretch.
Johnson led the Western New England College with 20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. He made 6-of-9 three-pointers,
Senior forward Brendan Murphy (West Springfield, MA) contributed 13 points and six rebounds while sophomore guard Andre Shaw (Jamaica, NY) chipped-in with 10 points. Junior forward Brad Thomka grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.
The Golden Bears committed a season high 32 turnovers against the pressing Blazers' defense.
