SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior basketball players Rick Johnson (Springfield, MA) and Caitlin Powers (Scotia, NY) were honored Wednesday (Dec. 16) as the Western New England College Male and Female Athletes-of-the-Week.
Johnson, a guard, averaged 17.0 points and 6.5 assists in a 2-0 week for the Golden Bears He had 25 points and seven assists in a 75-64 victory over Hartwick, and contributed nine points with six assists, the last one leading to the winning basket, in a 58-56 win over Union. A team captain, Johnson also pulled down four rebounds in each contest. He leads the team in scoring (20.6 avg.), assists (4.9), and field-goal percentage (52.6). Johnson is a Business major.
Western New England College has a three-game winning streak and 4-5 record at the holiday break.
Powers, a forward, came off the bench and helped Western New England College to a pair of wins in three outings. She netted a career high 20 points (which included 8-of-10 shooting from the field) with four rebounds, three assists, and a block shot in a 94-60 victory over Mount Ida. A Psychology major, Powers shot 52% from the field (13-for-25) in the three games.
Western New England College has a 5-3 record at the holiday break after winning four of its last five contests.
