BREWSTER, Mass. (October 24, 2016) – The Western New England University men's golf team finished in a tie for fourth place following round two action of the 82nd Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship today at The Captains Course.
Western New England, which sat in fifth place with a score of 318 following round one yesterday, turned in a 317 today and finished with a two-round total of 635. Babson topped the 20-team Division III field by seven strokes with a two-day score of 617, while Husson (624) and Nichols (633) finished second and third, respectively. Tufts climbed from ninth into a tie with the Golden Bears for fourth place after following up Sunday's 324 with a 311 today. Individually, Babson's Chris Bornhorst defeated Zachary Temple of Castleton in a one-hole playoff to claim medalist honors. Both players shot a two-day total of 148.
• Junior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.), Western New England's leader following round one with a five-over par 77, secured a top-ten finish after firing the same score today, placing him in a tie for ninth in the 99-player field.
• Junior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) also matched his round one effort today, posting his second consecutive 78 to finish in a three-way tie for 12th place.
• Senior Nick Shemkovitz (Meriden, Conn.) shaved seven strokes off Sunday's performance, following up his opening round 85 with a 78 today and finishing in a seven-way tie for 39th.
With their fall season complete, the Golden Bears will return to action in the spring, seeking the program's third consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title.
