Golden Bears finish 15 strokes ahead of 2nd place Salem State in spring opener
SUTTON, Mass. (April 11, 2017) – Led by junior Joe Ciolek's (South Hadley, Mass.) first place finish, the Western New England University men's golf team opened its spring season in impressive fashion, capturing the Rich Korzec Memorial Invitational by 15 strokes on Tuesday at Blackstone National Golf Club.
Western New England posted a team score of 307 to finish first in the eight-team field, 15 strokes ahead of 2nd place Salem State (322). Rhode Island College placed third (324), while host Worcester State (327) and Westfield State (332) rounded out the top five.
• Ciolek claimed medalist honors after shooting a two-over par 74, one shot better than Westfield State's Mike Sarkis. Ciolek registered three birdies and ten pars on his way to first place in the 45-player field.
• Senior Nick Shemkovitz (Meriden, Conn.) and junior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) finished in a five-way tie for third place after shooting matching 77s.
