Fontaine leads three top-ten finishers in second place with even-par 72
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 20, 2017) – Three players placed inside the top-10 as the Western New England University men's golf team captured its annual Invitational by two strokes on Thursday at Veterans Memorial Golf Course.
Western New England, which has now won three straight events to open the spring season, posted a score of 300 to finish first in the nine-team field. The Golden Bears edged out second place Rhode Island College (302) by two strokes, while Babson College (303), Endicott College (309) and Salem State University (315) rounded out the top five. Ben Palazzo of Endicott claimed medalist honors with a two-under par 70.
• Senior Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led the way for the Golden Bears, shooting an even-par 72 to place second overall in the 49-player field. Fontaine recorded four birdies and ten pars en route to his second consecutive 72.
• Junior Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.) finished in a four-way tie for fourth place after firing a 74, while junior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) registered a 75, good for a tie for eighth.
Also Competing for Western New England
• Senior Joe DaSilva (Watertown, Conn.) led Western New England's "White" team, posting a 78 to finish in a tie for 13th.
• Junior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) fired a 79 and placed 22nd overall.
Western New England will be back in action on Saturday at the Wildcat Spring Invitational, hosted by Johnson & Wales University at Cranston Country Club in Cranston, R.I.
