WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 2, 2018) – The Western New England University ice hockey team dropped its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener to Endicott College 11-0 on Friday evening at the Olympia Ice Center.
Endicott senior defenseman Carter Horwitz (Tustin, Calif.) powered the Gulls with two goals and two assists, while senior forward Josh Bowes (Edmonton, Alta.) also scored twice and added a helper.
Freshman goaltender Conor O'Brien (Pinellas Park, Fla.) turned away all 36 shots he faced to earn a shutout.
Western New England junior Dom Blad (Springfield, Mass.) recorded a team-high five shots for the Golden Bears.
Western New England had several solid scoring opportunities early in the contest, but it was Endicott that struck first on a goal by Horwitz 13:19 into the opening period.
Freshman Ricky Carballo (Keller, Texas) found the back of the net three minutes later as the Gulls opened up a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The visitors broke the game open with a five-goal second period, and they continued to pull away in the third with four more goals.
• The two teams were even with 13 shots apiece in the first period. Endicott outshot Western New England 45-36 overall.
• The Gulls scored on 2-of-3 power play opportunities and won 37-of-64 faceoffs.
Western New England (0-2-0, 0-1-0 CCC) and Endicott (1-0-1, 1-0-0 CCC) will head to Beverly, Mass. tomorrow for the second of three meetings between the two teams this season. Opening faceoff is slated for 4 p.m. at Raymond Bourque Arena.
