Western New England Builds Early Lead En Route to 16-6 Victory over Lasell in Home Opener

Lyons leads Golden Bears with career-high five goals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 3, 2018) –
The Western New England University men's lacrosse team raced out to an 8-0 first quarter lead and never looked back on its way to a 16-6 victory over Lasell College on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium. 

Top Performers
• Sophomore attackman Brendan Lyons (Syosset, N.Y.) fueled the Western New England offense with a career-high five goals, three of which came in the opening period.
• Junior Jared Ward (Littleton, Mass.) posted a four-point effort with three goals and an assist, while freshman defenseman Mitch Weiss (Westfield, Mass.) collected a game-high seven ground balls.

• Junior midfielder Mike Susi (Gorham, Maine) led Lasell with three goals on five shots.
• Senior midfielder Alex McCormack-Kuhlman (Wells, Maine) recorded a goal, an assist and three ground balls, while junior defenseman David Sheehan (Tewksbury, Mass.) picked up five ground balls and caused a game-high five turnovers.

Game Review

Senior Robert Koziol (Agawam, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Golden Bears with an unassisted tally 3:39 into the contest.

After Ward made it 2-0 at the 9:46 mark, Lyons scored a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart (8:55 and 8:33) to give Western New England a 4-0 advantage.

The Golden Bears would double their total by the end of the period, capped by Lyons' third goal of the afternoon with 26 seconds remaining in the frame.

After senior Nicholas Beauchamp (Wilbraham, Mass.) increased Western New England's lead to 9-0 early in the second quarter, Lasell broke through at the 12:05 mark with Susi's unassisted strike.

The Golden Bears tacked on three more goals later in the quarter, including a man-up tally by Ward with 33 seconds on the clock, to open up a 12-2 cushion at the break.

Western New England would go on to win by the same margin as each team scored four times in the second half.

• Western New England held a commanding 20-6 faceoff advantage, led by junior Hunter Cocks (Walden, N.Y.), who went 7-for-9 at the X. Senior Preston Stolberg (Highland Park, Ill.) posted a 7-for-10 effort, while freshman Jack Seiter (Ridgewood, N.J.) went 6-for-7.
• The Golden Bears continued to employ a balanced offensive attack, as nine different players scored for the second straight game.
• Western New England outshot Lasell 40-24 and collected 41 ground balls to the Lasers' 29.
• Lasell head coach Bill Mason (WNE '12) and assistant coach Jon Hayes (WNE '08) played collegiately for Western New England, with Hayes earning USILA All-America honors in both 2007 and 2008.

Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday night, as Western New England (2-0) travels to Amherst College for an early season showdown with the Mammoths, while Lasell (0-2) looks to bounce back at Connecticut College.
