Gamba collects first CCC Offensive Player of the Week honor, Cocks named CCC Specialist of the Week for the third time
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 16, 2018) – Sophomore midfielder Nick Gamba (East Islip, N.Y.) and junior faceoff specialist Hunter Cocks (Walden, N.Y.) of the Western New England University men's lacrosse team have both received weekly awards from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Gamba was named the CCC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, and Cocks collected his third CCC Specialist of the Week award this season following the Golden Bears' 2-0 week.
Western New England rallied from a four-goal deficit in the final four minutes, including a two-score hole in the last 30 seconds, to earn a 10-9 comeback victory over Nichols on Tuesday. The Golden Bears then posted a 12-8 road victory at Roger Williams on Saturday to improve their CCC record to 6-0 this season.
Gamba led the Western New England offense with nine points (seven goals, two assists) over the two-game stretch. He played a key role in Tuesday's comeback with a goal and two assists. The sophomore scored with 2:05 remaining to cut the Golden Bears' deficit to two (9-7) before eventually assisting on the game-winning goal with six seconds on the clock. He followed that performance up with a career-high six goals on Saturday at Roger Williams.
After recording 27 points as a freshman last spring, Gamba has compiled 42 points during his breakout sophomore campaign. He has at least one point in every game this season, with 11 multi-point efforts.
Cocks won 72% (32-of-44) of his faceoff opportunities and collected 26 ground balls during Western New England's 2-0 week. He posted an 18-for-23 effort with 13 ground balls in Tuesday's win over Nichols, before going 14-for-21 at the X on Saturday with 13 more ground balls against the Hawks.
The Walden, N.Y. native ranks 33rd nationally among 213 faceoff specialists with a .634 (101-for-175) winning percentage.
Western New England (9-5, 6-0 CCC) hosts Williams College in non-conference action on Tuesday night, before traveling to Salve Regina for a CCC contest on Saturday.
