Golden Bears defeat Hawks for first time since 2008
BRISTOL, R.I. (March 30, 2019) – The Western New England University men's tennis team earned an impressive 7-2 road victory over Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the RWU Tennis Courts.
The Golden Bears started the match with a sweep of doubles play to open up a 3-0 lead en route to their first victory over the Hawks since 2008.
Junior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and senior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-3 win over Dan Tocco and Brendan White at the top doubles position, while the duo of juniors Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France) and Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) defeated Miles Conlin and Thomas O'Leary 8-2 at No. 2.
Kalmer was also victorious in singles play, as he earned a 6-1, 6-3 result over White at No. 1. Bonnet cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Tocco at No. 2, and Kohut topped O'Leary 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
Roger Williams' two wins came at No. 4 and No. 5, courtesy of Cole (6-2, 2-6, 10-4 over Surawski) and Matty Feldman (7-6, 1-6, 10-6 over Gordon), respectively.
The No. 6 singles matchup saw junior Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) post a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Arlex Correa.
Western New England (4-2, 1-0 CCC) returns home to host Nichols on Tuesday, while Roger Williams (2-2, 0-1 CCC) continues its four-match homestand against Gordon.
