Western New England Picks up 8-1 Win over Johnson & Wales

Golden Bears improve to 5-3 this season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 4, 2019) – The Western New England University men's tennis team registered an 8-1 non-conference victory over Johnson & Wales University on Thursday afternoon at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.

Western New England got off to a strong start in doubles play, as sophomore Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman Joshua Jones (Schenectady, N.Y.) teamed up for an 8-2 win over Steven Heizler and Brandon Case in the No. 3 spot.

The Golden Bears also won at No. 2 doubles, as sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and junior Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France) earned an 8-5 decision over Will Lyons and Gianni Rodrigues.

Western New England completed the doubles sweep with a tight victory at No. 1, as the duo of junior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and senior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) defeated Franz Fonck and Alexander Rohana 8-7 (7-1).

In singles action, senior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) gave the Golden Bears a 4-0 lead with his 6-1, 6-0 decision over Robert Michalofsky at the No. 6 spot.

Sophomore Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) then posted a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Heizler at No. 5, and Kalmer kept it rolling with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Lyons at No. 1.

Kohut topped Fonck 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, and junior Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) came away with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Rodrigues at No. 4, before Rohana got the Wildcats on the board as he edged Bonnet 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 at No. 2 in the final matchup.
