Golden Bears win third straight match for second time this season
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 10, 2019) – The Western New England University men's tennis team posted a 9-0 victory over Curry College on Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.
The Golden Bears dominated doubles play to open up a 3-0 lead in the match. Freshman Joshua Jones (Schenectady, N.Y.) and sophomore Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) got it started with an 8-0 victory over Daniel Ritucci and Timothy O'Brien at No. 3, and the duo of juniors Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France) and Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) won by the same score against senior Dawson Stento and freshman Lorenzo Russo at No. 2.
Singles play began with a convincing victory for the Golden Bears as sophomore Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 result over O'Brien at No. 6.
Kohut topped Hefler 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, before Bonnet gave Western New England a 6-0 advantage with his 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Stento at No. 2.
The Golden Bears kept rolling with junior Griffin Arnold's (Meriden, Conn.) 6-1, 6-1 win over Ritucci at No. 5, while Surawski dispatched Russo 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.
In the final singles matchup, Kalmer edged Roach 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 1 to complete Western New England's 12th consecutive win over Curry.
Western New England (7-3, 3-1 CCC) remains at home to face Endicott on Saturday, while Curry (3-9, 1-3 CCC) returns to Milton to host UMass Boston on Thursday.
