Golden Bears Receive Three First Place Votes, Selected Third in CCC Preseason Coaches’ Poll

CCC Poll Release

Western New England opens 2016-17 campaign next Tuesday against Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 10, 2016) – The Western New England University women's basketball team has been selected to finish third in the 2016 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released today by the league office.

Western New England received three of a possible ten first place votes and finished third in the poll with 82 points. The University of New England was selected by the CCC's head coaches to repeat as conference champion with six first place votes and 91 points, while Roger Williams claimed the final first place tally and checked in at No. 2 with 84 points. Endicott (81 points) and Salve Regina (56) followed the Golden Bears in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Western New England is coming off its most successful season in a decade, as the Golden Bears went 19-11 and posted runner-up finishes in both the CCC Tournament and ECAC New England Championship in 2015-16. Despite losing CCC Player of the Year Chelsea Vujs to graduation, 12th year head coach Nicole Chaszar returns four of her top five leading scorers from a season ago.

Junior guard Dorothy O'Neill (Staten Island, N.Y.), a two-time All-CCC selection, is back to lead the offense after averaging 9.8 points and 3.8 assists per game last season, while senior forward Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.), an All-CCC second team honoree, provided both scoring (12.3 PPG) and rebounding (3.7 RPG) during her junior campaign. Western New England will be experienced as seniors Sammie Battaini (Leominster, Mass.), Sammie Olson (Tolland, Conn.) and Paige Young (Berlin, Conn.) all return.

The Golden Bears open their 2016-17 season next Tuesday night at home with a non-conference matchup against crosstown rival Springfield College. Western New England kicks off the CCC portion of its schedule at Salve Regina on November 30.
