ITHACA, N.Y. (November 6, 2015) -
The Western New England University wrestling team sits in tenth place following the opening day of the 32nd annual Ithaca Invitational, hosted by Ithaca College at Glazer Arena.
Western New England scored 13.0 points for its tenth-place performance in the 12-team field, ahead of Daniel Webster College (12.5 points) and Alfred State College (10.5). Springfield College leads after day one with 39.0 points, while host Ithaca (35.5) and the Rochester Institute of Technology (31.5) round out the top three.
Sophomore Austin Sisco (Denville, N.J.) provided the highlight of the day for the Golden Bears by advancing to the quarterfinals in the 133 pound bracket after pinning Isaiah Ocasio of RIT, and will face Ithaca's Chris Wymer tomorrow.
Freshman Aaric Rivera (Brockton, Mass.) and redshirt sophomore Greg McCrystal (Edison, N.J.) each secured wins at 149 pounds before dropping their second bout, while freshman Josh Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) was defeated in a 7-3 decision at 165 pounds by Colin Navickas of the Stevens Institute of Technology.
Freshman Patrick Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.) dropped a 9-0 major decision in the 174 pound bracket before rebounding with a 7-3 decision over Ithaca's Jaison White.
