Wrestling Opens 2015-16 Campaign with Two Wins in Three Matches at RWU Quad Meet
BRISTOL, R.I. (November 1, 2015) - The Western New England University wrestling team opened its 2015-16 season today with two wins in three matches against SUNY Oneonta, Bridgewater State University, and Roger Williams University, which hosted the quad meet at its Recreational Center Gymnasium.
 
Western New England posted a 22-21 victory over SUNY Oneonta, fell to Roger Williams by a score of 43-4, and capped the day with a 26-25 win against Bridgewater State.
 
Sophomore Austin Sisco (Denville, N.J.) led the way for the Golden Bears, going 3-0 at 133 pounds, while redshirt sophomore Greg McCrystal (Edison, N.J.) went 2-0 at 149 and sophomore Lamont Wallace (New Rochelle, N.Y.) won two of his three bouts at 141. Junior Brian Donovan (Manchester, Conn.) also posted a winning record today, going 2-1 at 197 pounds.
 
Western New England 22, Oneonta 21
The Golden Bears opened up their season with a victory against Oneonta, opening up a 19-0 lead before holding on for a close win. Sophomore Tom McLinden (Plaistow, N.H.) got it started with a 10-1 major decision victory over junior Steven Lee (West Babylon, N.Y) at 125 pounds, and Sisco followed with a 2-0 decision against sophomore Anthony Messina (Farmingville, N.Y.). Wallace and McCrystal each pinned their respective opponents as Western New England took control of the contest.
 
The Red Dragons posted four straight wins to get back into the match, before Donovan defeated senior Vincent Provenzano (Islip, N.Y.) in a 2-1 decision to give the Golden Bears a 22-15 lead they would not relinquish.
 
Roger Williams 43, Western New England 4        
Sisco provided the highlight in the Golden Bears' setback to Roger Williams, winning a 9-0 major decision over freshman Jean-Luc Lemieux (Derry, N.H.). The Hawks, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division III, won all three of their matches at today's meet.
 
Western New England 26, Bridgewater State 25
Western New England posted another tight victory, this time over Bridgewater State, to close out its first day of action. Sisco and McCrystal each posted wins for the Golden Bears, while freshman Pat Canavan picked up his first collegiate triumph with an 18-8 major decision victory over Bears junior Matt Provost (Attleboro, Mass.) at 184 pounds. Donovan also recorded a key result, pinning Hiago Fontoura (Hudson, Mass.) to help secure Western New England's win.
 
Western New England (2-1) returns to action next weekend at the Ithaca Invitational, hosted by Ithaca College in upstate New York.
