Four Golden Bears featured in NEWA rankings
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (December 28, 2018) – Western New England University junior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) has climbed to the No. 2 spot at 184 pounds in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings that were released last week.
Boyle (13-2) rose from No. 7 to No. 2 in the national rankings following his 3-2 decision over third-ranked Khamri Thomas of Johnson & Wales University on December 15. His win avenged last season's 4-3 overtime loss to Thomas in the 184-pound championship bout at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships.
Boyle also overtook Thomas for the top spot in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) rankings, while three other Golden Bears earned regional rankings.
Sophomore Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) moved up to No. 6 at 125 pounds with a record of 14-5, and classmate Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) maintained the No. 5 position at 141 pounds with a mark of 14-3. Arborio and Monteiro, who are tied for second on the team with five pins this season, also earned national recognition recently with their honorable mention selections in last week's d3wrestle.com rankings.
Junior Ryan Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.) is tabbed fourth at 174 pounds to round out Western New England's four individuals in the latest NEWA rankings.
The Golden Bears open their second semester schedule next Saturday, January 5 at the Williams College Open.
