Suschana posts key win over NEWA No. 7 ranked Fox Maxwell at 165
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (January 9, 2019) – The Western New England University wrestling team earned a 26-19 victory over Bridgewater State University on Wednesday evening in New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) action at Kelly Gymnasium.
Western New England got off to a strong start with wins in the first three bouts, as sophomore Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) notched a 17-5 major decision victory over Wilson Gomes at 125, junior Austin Roche (Southborough, Mass.) picked up an 11-5 decision over Caleb Lamarre at 133, and sophomore Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.) registered a 16-4 major decision result over Andrew Valdina at 141 to give the Golden Bears an early 11-0 advantage.
Riley Tufts got Bridgewater State on the board with his 11-6 decision over freshman Andrew Piedrahita (Westford, Mass.) at 149, and Devin Winn followed by pinning junior DJ Tartsinis (Colchester, Conn.) at 149 to cut the home team's deficit to 11-9.
In the key 165-pound bout, freshman Jeffrey Suschana (Somers, Conn.) won a 10-6 decision over Fox Maxwell, who entered the match ranked seventh in NEWA.
Bridgewater State responded with Wilfredo David's 12-4 major decision victory over junior Taylor Pfaff (Albany, N.Y.) at 174 to make it 14-13, but junior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) gave the Golden Bears some breathing room with his pin of Robert Fryar II at 184, and senior Josh Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) won by forfeit at 197.
With Western New England's win already secured, Bridgewater State's Ryan Higgins won by fall over freshman Akhmet Azizov (Chicopee, Mass.) in the heavyweight bout.
The Golden Bears (5-3) travel to Collegeville, Pa. on Saturday for the Will Abele Invitational at Ursinus College.
