Arborio & DeLucia place 5th and 7th, respectively
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (February 24, 2019) – Junior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) posted runner-up finishes at 184 and 157 pounds, respectively, as the Western New England University wrestling team placed ninth at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships following Sunday's action at the Wildcat Center on the campus of Johnson & Wales University.
Boyle and Monteiro, who went 2-0 on Saturday, won their semifinal bouts on Sunday morning to secure their spot in the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held in two weeks (March 8-9) in Roanoke, Va.
Monteiro clinched his first career NCAA Championship berth with a 3-1 decision over Coast Guard's Christian Gosch, but he was defeated in the finals by Tyler Marsh (WPI) in a close 4-3 decision.
Boyle earned his place in the national tournament for the second straight season via his 6-3 decision over Dan Wensley of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
In the 184-pound championship bout, which featured the No. 2 (Boyle) and No. 3 (Khamri Thomas, JWU) ranked wrestlers in the nation, Thomas came away with a 10-2 major decision victory.
Arborio placed fifth at 125 pounds after going 2-1 on the day. He defeated David Yeh (Williams) in a 10-6 decision, but was pinned in the first round by Peter Del Gallo (Southern Maine), before capping his regional performance with a win by fall (4:31) over Diego Santiago in the fifth place bout.
DeLucia finished seventh at 141, as he dropped a 4-3 decision to JD Fitzpatrick (Coast Guard) before winning the seventh place match by sudden victory (12-10) over Chris Fuschetto (Roger Williams).
As a team, the Golden Bears placed ninth in the 17-team field with 54.5 points. Host JWU won the team title with 187 points, while Coast Guard (120), Roger Williams (117), WPI (84.5), and Castleton (83.5) rounded out the top-five. Western New England finished ahead of Springfield College (54) and Wesleyan (51).
