Wrestling Defeats Norwich in Home Opener, 26-19

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England University wrestling team posted a 26-19 victory over Norwich University on Friday night in the Golden Bears' home opener at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Western New England got off to a strong start with wins in the first three bouts to open up a 12-0 lead. Freshman Corey Cope (Quakertown, Pa.) got it started with a 12-3 major decision result over CJ Beeghley at 125 pounds, and junior captain Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) followed with a 15-7 major decision triumph over Cameron Wooldridge at 133.

Junior Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.) registered Western New England's third straight major decision win (19-6) against Drake Troyer at 141, before Benjamin Forsman got the Cadets on the board via his 11-3 major decision over freshman Ryan Tripodi (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) at 149.

The Golden Bears regained the momentum at 157 as junior captain Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) claimed an 18-3 technical fall result over Cody Lewis to give the home team a commanding 17-4 advantage.

After senior Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) pinned Cameron Smith in the first period of the 165 pound bout to increase Western New England's lead to 23-4, Norwich was able to win at 174 and 184 as Niki Chity and Daniel Curran topped freshman Alec Arnold (Wethersfield, Conn.) and senior Davey Goodall (Chelmsford, Mass.), respectively.

In the final two matchups, junior Dan Price (Nyack, N.Y.) won a sudden victory result over Gabriel Duden at 197, and Norwich's Mike Wagner pinned WNE freshman Romelo Medina (Springfield, Mass.) at 285.
