CCC Preseason Coaches' Poll

Golden Bears travel to Keene State for 2018 opener on Saturday, September 1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (August 22, 2018) –
The Western New England University women's soccer team has been picked fourth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears received 53 points in the poll, which is voted on by all nine coaches in the CCC. Endicott College was selected as the preseason favorite with 77 points and five first place votes, and Roger Williams was right behind the Gulls with 74 points and the remaining four first place tallies. Gordon finished ahead of Western New England in third place with 63 points, while the University of New England (38 points), Wentworth (38 points), Salve Regina (32 points), Curry (17 points) and Nichols (13 points) followed the Golden Bears in the final five slots.

Western New England brings back the majority of its key players from a 2017 squad that went 10-8-2 (7-2 CCC) and hosted its first home playoff game in over a decade.

Kristin Hensinger '07, last season's CCC Coach of the Year, will look to take the Golden Bears deeper into the CCC Tournament in her third season at the helm of her alma mater.

Western New England will be led by junior goalkeeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.), who posted a 0.98 goals against average with a CCC-leading eight shutouts last fall on her way to All-CCC first team honors. Senior captain Erin Grimes (Attleboro, Mass.) will anchor the defense, while sophomore forward Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) will look to again be a key offensive contributor following her CCC Rookie of the Year campaign last season.

Western New England opens up its 2018 slate on the road at Keene State on Saturday, September 1st, before returning to Suprenant Field to host Springfield College on Wednesday, September 5th. The Golden Bears will host Endicott College in their CCC opener on Saturday, September 15th.
